15e eeuwse beukelaar, type IB Viking jurken & hangerocs "E Pluribus Unum" and "IronThis buckler is classified as a type IB according to Herbert Schmidts typology. It has a round shape with sloping edges. The earliest depictions of this type of buckler appear in the early 14th century Tower manuscript, though such shields were likely already in use well into the 13th century. Bucklers like this one remained in use until the 16th century. Bucklers were ideal for hand to hand combat and were often used by armored knights and archers.
