Constructed of gilded zink, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a raised leftward facing profile of Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with a central inscription of DEM VERDIENST 1914 (FOR MERIT 1914), within an oak leaf wreath, unmarked, measuring 36. 18 mm in diameter,
